Coal Ash Spill: Environmental Nightmare
The Tennessee Valley got an early Christmas present in the form of Millions of gallons of ash sludge, that poured through a broken dike at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Coal Plant, west of Knoxville, the day before Christmas.
Critics of clean coal plants say that clean coal is an oxymoron and that this incident goes to prove it. The sludge poured out taking power lines and approximately a dozen homes with it. A man was trapped in one of the homes during the incident and the home was moved 30 feet off its foundation. The man was reportedly not injured. The sludge also contains very high levels of heavy metals, such as Arcenic and Mercury. Clean up could take weeks, or more likely months, and millions of dollars to get rid of the 4 ft deep sludge that now covers hundreds of acres.
